NOTE: The photos of the animals in this blog are the four longest residents to date of Lucky Tales Rescue.

Lucky Tales Rescue (LTR), located in and around Fort Thomas, Kentucky, began in 2015 with a small group of likeminded people who were passionate about creating a sustainable rescue centered around quality adoptions and community involvement. Since then, they have helped more than 1,000 animals find their own Lucky Tale. Here’s what they had to tell us about the rescue and what they’ve been doing.

Stormi is dog selective, but a huge snuggler with her people.

What made you want to start a rescue?
The founding members of the rescue had been involved in the rescue community in some degree for many years. We all witnessed the difficulties that rescues faced, the insurmountable number of homeless pets, and the need for community outreach. We wanted to find a way to bring our skill sets and knowledge together in a way that would benefit the lives of animals in our area.

Annabeth came to the shelter as a kitten and is now about six months old.

Tell us more about Lucky Tales.
LTR is a foster based rescue, meaning all of our adoptable pets are in foster homes or with our small business partner, Lulu’s Pet Pantry. We have a group of amazing volunteers who work tirelessly to help go through adoption applications, check references, and conduct home visits. Our adoptions are not on a first come, first served basis. Each pet is carefully fitted to an adoptive home based on their personality and lifestyle requirements. We work with a number of area veterinarians to ensure pets are going to their forever homes fully vetted and healthy. We encourage adoptive families to maintain contact with us through yearly check-ins and a Facebook group.  We frequently work cooperatively with other rescue groups to share resources and knowledge. We also work with area rural shelters to help get dogs into foster homes and

Stella is a good dog with lots of energy who has been at the shelter since November 2023.

Is there anything that sets you apart from other rescues/shelters?
I think that our relationships with the community, other rescues, and local small businesses really sets us apart from other rescues. We have worked hard to build a strong, positive reputation in Northern Kentucky. People know that we are about providing quality adoptions—meaning we are looking for lifelong homes for the pets in our care. We are aiming to keep pets with their families and work hard to ensure we are not quick to adopt out a pet if it may not be the right fit. We are not an organization for impulsivity. We are for people who are looking to add a pet to their family that is going to bring them a lifetime of joy—a pet that is going to suit them and their lifestyle for years to come.

Bagel is shy but sweet and has been a resident at LTR for more than a year.

Why is saving animals so important to you?
The animals we share our lives with are some of the greatest gifts we are given. Animals who find themselves without a home are truly the innocent bystanders of human irresponsibility and ignorance. We have an obligation to these beautiful creatures to provide them with an opportunity to live a full and happy life in a home that will treat them as a member of their family.

Is there any significance to the Lucky Tales name?

Our name came from the idea of happy endings for all of the pets we are able to help.
