Why Dark Dog Posse?

Shine A Light

There is a theory that dark dogs get adopted far less frequently than lighter-colored dogs. We want to shine a light on that idea to make sure that all dogs—all animals, for that matter—have an equal chance to find their furever homes.

What Sparkes Us

How It Got Started

The team at Dark Dog Posse has been volunteering and fostering with animal rescues for more than 20 years. During that time, we’ve had literally hundreds of dogs go through our home. Along the way, we have experienced the heartbreak of Parvo, the joy (and frustration) of puppies, the challenges of older animals, and the satisfaction of knowing we’re saving lives. We have learned a lot over the years, and we’re sure there is still so much more to discover.

What Drives Us

Why Rescue Is Important

There are more than 70,000 puppies and kittens born in the United States each day, many from unwanted pregnancies that could have been prevented by responsible pet owners. Considering that there are approximately 10,000 humans born each day in the U.S., you can see how the numbers are against the animals, unless each person born takes care of at least every seven dogs and cats throughout their lifetime. As you can imagine, that’s a pretty big task.

What Moves Us

Our Goals

Education is the key to success when it comes to addressing the problems associated with unwanted animal overpopulation. Spaying and neutering is one easy solution that some people just don’t understand. It’s not mean or cruel to have your animal “fixed.” In fact, doing so actually helps to prolong the animal’s life and keeps them healthier, even if they predominantly live outside. And in many cases, there are affordable options for those on a budget.

For those who are not part of the problem but still want to help, there are lots of easy ways to be involved with the solution.

  • Adopting from a shelter is one great way.
  • Fostering is a good way to “spring” an animal from being caged up all day and provides you with an opportunity to socialize the animal and learn his or her particular personality and traits. You can then become the animal’s greatest advocate by passing on what you know to potential adopters.
  • Volunteering at shelters gives rescues animals an opportunity to interact with people to feel love and attention.
  • If none of those work into your current plans, donations to local rescues are always appreciated.

Eventually, we’d like to start a rescue of our own. This website is the next step in the journey toward that destination.
