In an effort to populate the Rescue Partners page on the Dark Dog Posse website, we reached out to several animal rescues and shelters individually by email to personally invite them to be a part of our movement. One of those rescues was the Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation. Unfortunately, the message we sent to them went to their SPAM folder. Fortunately, Dawn Pfendler, CEO and Co-Founder of HARF, discovered the message and contacted us. We were happy to bring them into our family and even more pleased to share their story with our readers. Here’s what Dawn had to tell us.
How did the Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation get started?
The rescue started in 2011 due to the high euthanasia rate on the island. Since then, many things have changed, and our primary focus is on humane education. We specialize in the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of dogs and livestock. I am one of the original founders.
How long have you been operating?
13 years.

Tell us about the rescue and the programs you offer.
The Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation (HARF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming animals in need. Here are some key aspects of their programs:
- Rescue and Adoption: HARF rescues animals from high-kill shelters, abusive situations, and other dangerous environments. They provide medical care, rehabilitation, and foster homes until these animals can be adopted into loving, permanent homes.
- Spay and Neuter Program: To help control the pet population and reduce the number of homeless animals, HARF offers spay and neuter services. These services are often provided at low or no cost to the community.
- Education and Outreach: HARF conducts educational programs to raise awareness about animal welfare issues. They teach responsible pet ownership, the importance of spaying/neutering, and how to prevent animal cruelty.
- Community Support: HARF provides resources and support to pet owners in the community, including assistance with pet food, medical care, and other essentials. They also offer advice and support for behavioral issues to help keep pets in their homes.
- Volunteer and Foster Programs: HARF relies on volunteers and foster families to help care for animals. Volunteers assist with a variety of tasks, including animal care, administrative work, and fundraising. Foster families provide temporary homes for animals until they are adopted.
These programs collectively aim to improve the lives of animals and foster a compassionate community.

Is there anything that sets you apart from other rescues/shelters?
We are a no-kill organization with a primary focus on social services and humane education.
Why is saving animals so important to you and or the organization?
Animal rescue is a reflection of larger problems within our community. We collaborate and partner with organizations statewide with long-term strategies to help end suffering and improve the welfare of our communities.
Is there any significance to your name?
We use the word “Hawaii” instead of “Maui” to be more inclusive.
