Dark Dog Posse has been affiliated with 4 PAWS since before DDP was even an idea. They are a foster-based group (no physical shelter) based in Hayes, Virginia, but they serve a wide portion of Virginia and North Carolina, often pulling dogs and cats from shelters that are severely overcrowded to try to find furever homes for everyone. One of their previous foster dogs is currently living his best life in Hawaii and is spoiled to no end by his new caretakers. We’re extremely pleased to have 4 PAWS as our inaugural Rescue Spotlight. Here’s what co-founder Kelly Endebrock had to say about their efforts.
How did 4 PAWS get started?
We became empty nesters who loved dogs and had extra time on our hands. My passion had always been saving animals and it felt like it was time to make a giant leap. Thankfully my husband was on board with the decision!
What made you want to start a rescue?
We had fostered for a few years and loved it! We had a few friends encourage us to start a rescue and with their help 4 PAWS was born.
How long have you been operating?
We started in July 2015 and got our 501c3 nonprofit August 4, 2015.
Tell us about the rescue?
First and foremost, our fosters and volunteers are part of our extended family. We know that without them 4 PAWS wouldn’t exist. We are a home-based, all-volunteer rescue. We have a sanctuary for unadoptable dogs (seniors, behavior issues, and hospice dogs). We have THE BEST foster homes for the dogs to learn how to dog and get ready for adoption. Our volunteers are amazing; they help with fundraising, transport, and pretty much anything else we ask them to do. Together since 2015 we have saved 2016 animals!
Is there something that makes you different from other rescues?
We believe in not only saving animals but having a presence in the community. We provide food for those that cannot feed their animals. We help with lost and found dogs. We support many other causes.
Why is saving animals important to you?
Saving animals is our passion. Seeing them hurt, suffering, and unwanted has to stop. Animals have no voice, so we are their voice.
Is there any significance to the 4 PAWS name?
The number 4 is my favorite number and most of the animals we save have 4 Paws.
Anything else you’d like to add?
In rescue there is a lot of drama. We try to stay out of the drama as best as possible. 4 PAWS is, always has been, and always will be about the animals. Our decisions are all made based on what is best for the animals.
